Barack Hussein Obama II born  August 4, 1961 is a retired American politician who led the country as its 44th president from 2009 to 2017. He was the first African-American president of the United States and a member of the Democratic Party. Prior to joining politics, Obama practiced civil rights law and previously served as both an Illinois state senator from 1997 to 2004 and a U.S. senator from Illinois from 2005 to 2008.
