From 1987 until his passing in 2020, John Robert Lewis, an American politician and civil rights advocate, represented Georgia's 5th congressional district in the US House of Representatives. Lewis was born on February 21, 1940, and died on July 17, 2020. He took part in the 1960 Nashville sit-ins, the Freedom Rides, served as the SNCC's chairman from 1963 to 1966, and was one of the "Big Six" leaders of the organizations that planned the 1963 March on Washington. Lewis played a variety of significant roles in the civil rights movement's efforts to stop the country's practice of legalized racial segregation. In 1965, he led the first of three Selma to Montgomery marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, where, in an incident that came to be known as Bloody Sunday.
