The Nelson Mandela
The Nelson Mandela
One of the most famous men in not only Africa but in the history of black people.
The first president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999 was Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013), a South African anti-apartheid activist and politician. He was both the first completely representative democratic election and the nation's first black head of state. By promoting racial harmony, his administration put its efforts into eradicating the legacy of apartheid. From 1991 to 1997, he presided over the African National Congress (ANC), a political organization with socialist and African nationalist ideologies. Between Robben Island, Pollsmoor Prison, and Victor Verster Prison, Mandela spent 27 years in prison. President F. W. de Klerk freed him in 1990 in the face of mounting local and international pressure as well as concerns over a potential racial civil war.
